Mel has had a lifelong relationship with sailing and served in the Royal Marines for 11years, before leaving in 1990 to start a new career. His interest in sailing introduced him the world of yacht rigging and also spent 2 years working as a commercial diver in Angola. A2 Rigging was formed in 1996 and is now based in Falmouth, which is run as a family business with Mel, wife Melanie and Daughter Claire. Having competed in the Fastnet and numerous regattas both in the UK and abroad the challenge of the AZAB from our home port has been on the to do list for several years. Claire at 33 was introduced to sailing at a very early age and having worked as a sailing instructor in the Mediterranean, completed two transatlantic crossings and sailed competitively in dinghies, yachts and with her Dad on numerous family boats is looking forward to sailing with her Dad in this year AZAB race. Mel and Claire have sailed together for 30 years on many boats, including the families boat Rainbows Child a Hunter Delta 25, an Osprey Dinghy, Riff Raff a First Class 8 and now for the last 8 years they have raced both locally and travelled with the rest of the family on their Stephen Jones Half Tonner 'Demolition' It cannot go without saying that they are both looking forward greatly to this adventure and are immensely grateful to “Young Jack” Penty, for the generous loan of his Dehler 36 “NOON HI’’
