Royal Solent Yacht Club
I began sailing when I lived in the USA as a boy. We were close to Long Island Sound where they would do all the sailing trials to determine which of the American 12 metre yachts would be chosen to sail in the America’s Cup. Apart from some dinghy sailing back in the UK I did not do any regular sailing until my wife and I bought a Starlight 35 in 1997. When we moved to the Isle of Wight in 2000 we joined the Route Solent Yacht Club and started to race the boat on a regular basis, mainly locally around the cans but also in the West Solent Cruiser Racing Association which included several cross Channel races. We also did a lot of cruising in France, the West Country and the Isles of Scilly. For the last few years we have concentrated on One Design racing in our Folkboat which we find great fun and very competitive. At 72 I still love challenges and the AZAB is one I am looking forward to enormously. I will be joined by Graham Darby who is our regular crew on our Folkboat. We will be competing in a Reflex 38 which which should be a very suitable boat and is a great boat to sail.
