I first learned to sail on the heavy dinghies that were on the Serpentine in Hyde Park in 1972 and have sailed ever since. I raced a Ruffian 23 for over a dozen years and have cruised the Irish Coast, the North Channel, Clyde and Hebrides for many years with my family in the summer and Belfast Lough on my own in the winter. I am proud to be a member of both the Royal Highland Yacht Club and the Irish Cruising Club. I look forward to racing to the Azores in a boat that was designed in the mid 1970s and built in the mid 1990s. I rely on my Hydrovane, Baldric, to steer for me and have not been disappointed in his ability to keep me right in light and heavy winds. The cutter rig makes life more comfortable in heavier weather. My intention is to sail the course and if I do that at reasonable speed I will be more than satisfied.
