ZestHumphreyscustomSail No.GBR 536Boat Length11.1Kathryn 'Kass' SchmittDouble-handedZest is a 36 foot custom design by Rob Humphreys. Built in strip cedar epoxy by Farrow & Chambers in Grimsby UK, she was launched in 1992 and campaigned fully-crewed in the RORC and JOG fleets. Kass bought her in January 2013 with the intention of racing in the 2013 OSTAR. An extensive refit was undertaken to optimise Zest for shorthanded racing, but was not finished in time for that race. She subsequently finished first in class and second overall in the 2014 Royal Western Round Britain and Ireland Race and won line honours in her class (and 3rd on corrected) in the outbound leg of the 2015 AZAB and 5th on corrected on the return, which Kass raced solo. A cruise to the Caribbean in October 2015 was cut short by a meeting with a rogue wave 150 miles off the northwest corner of Spain, which resulted in the loss of the mast and a two square meter hole in the deck. After rescuing themselves and Zest, Rupert and Kass spent the following year repairing and strengthening Zest before Kass set off on the 2017 OSTAR, from which she retired after weathering the storm which claimed four boats. In 2018 Kass completed the Solo Offshore Racing Club’s 600 mile race round the Fastnet Rock on Zest, losing graciously to Rupert on Jangada. Kass intends to race Zest in the 2020 OSTAR.
