Purple Mist used to be a Sun Odyssey 36i and has been a regular participant in RORC races since 2016 and in 2018 discovered the delights of JOG. What she lacked in speed she made up for in persistence completing many races where other slow boats gave in. She has won the RORC Spica cup twice and in 2018 Purple Mist and Bigfoot won the RORC John West trophy for the best 2 boat team in the St Malo race. In 2018 Purple Mist made a serious plea for an upgraded hull promising her owner never to miss the Fastnet party again. Her wish was granted and along came the Sunfast 3200 R2 a boat that is definitely beating up the co-skippers more when they try and push her too hard. New Purple Mist has not been too far yet, but she has a busy schedule planned for 2019 with a double handed RORC Fastnet campaign and JOG races as well as AZAB. She is easy to spot with purple graphics and a purple boom and has a loyal support group of armchair sailors who are experts on the YB tracking app.
RORC , JOG, RBYC
Kate has been sailing since 2006 and bought the first Purple Mist (Sun Odyssey 36i) for cruising in 2008. She has plenty of experience cruising but is relatively new to offshore racing. She was bitten by the offshore bug in 2016 after skippering her first offshore race RORC Myth of Malham. In 2017 she skippered Purple Mist for the RORC Fastnet campaign taking part in all the RORC Races from Cowes. In 2018 she moved into doublehanded offshore racing and raced RORC and JOG. Purple Mist came 3rd in JOG Offshore Class 5 season points mostly due to Kate’s persistence and not giving up. 2019 is the biggest challenge yet with a new Purple Mist – Sunfast 3200R2. With a lot still to learn on the new boat they are in AZAB for the adventure, Kate was the Commodore of the Royal County of Berkshire yacht club from 2012-2018, she is currently a committee member of JOG and a member of RORC.
